2K Hires Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Follows Mixed Reception

Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president a key figure informed team members about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the requirement for a more defined direction.

Ismailer stated that the team is now overhauling the project with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news echoes a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Here is the full text from Ismailer's announcement:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”

Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the feedback to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its ambition to our fans.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To further the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. After a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on next week.

His management and background in the PVP shooter space is vast, having spent the recent years producing and managing some of the most popular titles in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to persist observing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.

Experience of the New Head

The appointee presently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Concept

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year alongside a early access event. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary explains. "Challenge the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and tests that change every session. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, risk it all, and hope your group can secure victory? The option is up to you."

Project Ethos lacks an announced launch window or platforms, but fans can look forward to additional details as creation advances.
