RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
