Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
